Radio Spotlight: Armchair Boogie

KPSQ features several programs produced by local community members. In this blog post, we shine a light on Armchair Boogie, a local show produced and hosted by Logan, aka Local Vinyl Fanatic.

Tell us about your radio show. What is it about?
Armchair Boogie is an all-vinyl radio show focusing on the lesser-known and sometimes strange artists throughout the peak of the vinyl record. Ranging from 50s rock-‘n’-roll to 60s & 70s folk and soul, and the occasional unexpected cut, I’m excited in sharing anything with a cutting edge of intrigue and storied history. The show airs every Sunday from 7 pm to 8 pm. Personally, I have a deep appreciation for the vinyl record as an art medium and an archivable history. Being young enough for my musical knowledge to grow out of iTunes and streaming into the vinyl revival, I feel an obligation to extend that revival into the radio realm.

When did your show start airing on KPSQ?
Armchair Boogie went to air in early August of 2021 and was born out of a few situations, one being the ever-growing number of records in my collection and a burning desire to share them. Two, the idea of playing records that maybe went unheard at their time of release and missed out on air time when radio play meant a career boost. Also, I work downtown so being close to the point of broadcast for KPSQ, I felt the urge to lay my mark on the musical landscape of the town I hold near and dear.

What do you like about doing radio?
What I like about doing radio is being part of a tradition and history of the disc jockey as a mediator between the folks making the music and the folks listening to the music. It’s fulfilling to my soul knowing my corner of musical interest is out there surfing the waves and reaching people that want to connect on the basis of music.

Any good movie, book, or music recommendations?
The show name itself, Armchair Boogie, derives from an album of the same name released in 1971 by folkster Michael Hurley. I play one song from Mr. Hurley on every show as well. He acts as a “vibe check” for all songs selected for the show.
