Radio Spotlight: The Unbreakable Net

KPSQ features several programs produced by local community members. In this blog post, we shine a light on The Unbreakable Net, a local show produced and hosted by Dee Gardner.

Tell us about your radio show. What is it about?
My show airs on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month at 3 pm. It is an hour-long show where I share tunes and stories and try to portray the connections between both. For example, I’ve had a show with a wide variety of music, but all produced by Rick Rubin. During Pride Month, I crafted a show where each song featured a color in the Pride Flag. Most recently, my show was featuring bands that played this past Hillberry Music Festival in Eureka Springs. I am fairly new to dj’ing and I’ve found that the idea that I had originally started with has evolved over the last few months. The goal with my hour is to create a succinct episode filled with positivity and humor and to focus on the fact that we are all, in fact, one human family.

When did your show start airing on KPSQ?
My show started airing in April 2021. I had put together an hour-long show for Sirius XM’s Phish Radio on a segment called “Crowd Control”. I’m a HUGE Phish fan (have been seeing them since 1997). I had talked to Theron (Theronius Chunk) about my show and he let me know that the station was looking for new shows. I had really enjoyed putting together the Crowd Control episode and Theron invited me to speak with Keith. A couple of Zoom calls later, and I was in!

What do you like about doing radio?
There’s a ton I enjoy. I love learning new things. I enjoy the planning and process to develop each show. I’ve also learned that I say “uhhhh” and “ummmm” A LOT. So, it’s been a bit introspective and educational for me. I absolutely LOVE IT when my friends and family tune in and call/text me, letting me know that they’ve listened. It’s another way for me to connect to people, and to share music and moments with them.

Any good movie, book, or music recommendations?
Oh, this is a loaded question~! I highly suggest any book written by Bill Bryson. I also enjoy Chuch Palahniuk. I’m currently reading “Green Lights” the Matthew McConaughey autobiography. I love watching movies too. Any movie produced by Judd Apatow is gonna be a winner in my book. I appreciate Kubrick, Spielberg and love Wes Anderson movies. And music is my love language. I LOVE discovering new music while appreciating the artists that came before. I actually played clarinet for about 20 years of my life and spent about 10 years running sound for local bands in Boone NC and Asheville NC. I’ve also done stage work both as local crew in auditoriums and clubs, but also worked a bit as local crew for the IATSE stage workers’ union. I thrive on the energy of live music. That’s why I feel so lucky to be able to share an hour of music a couple of times a month with KPSQ.

Where can people find more information about your show?
This is a great question. I guess I should start a website and/or a social media page for my show! Ha!

Catch The Unbreakable Net on KPSQ-LP 97.3 FM every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 3 pm.
